We knew back in March there was going to be some problems with this schedule, due to football schedule.
But for the first time UH is going to have football and Wahine volleyball on the same Saturday. And they'll do it twice. The first will be opening weekend where football vs. Washington is scheduled for 2 p.m., Wahine vs. Arizona State at 8 p.m. The second is the following weekend. On Sept. 6, Wahine play at noon vs. St. John's, football at 430 vs. Oregon State.
there also is volleyball on a football Saturday (Sept 13) when UCLA plays Utah State, single game. football vs. Northern Iowa that night.
And, for the first time in a very long time, UCLA is not the marquee match of a tournament. UH plays the Bruins on Friday, Sept. 12., second match.
Shoji said they had little choice and making the best of it. some of it due to the teams that were coming out and unable to stay to play Sunday. or even the Labor Day Monday. He hopes that those that have tickets to both sports will go to both. To be honest, I don't see it, especially the noon match.
Also IMHO don't see that they've done the fans any favors with the Nov. 28-29 matches at 8 p.m. Late start due to Wahine basketball tournament. If basketball goes late, and it has in the past, the matches might not start until 830 or later. No knock on Wahine basketball but they do not draw. They averaged 1,675, helped by the doubleheaders with the men. Wahine volleyball averaged 7,590. That's nearly a 6,000 fan difference.
one last gripe ... I don't get why they keep starting the Wahine tournaments at 5 p.m. UH men start at 4 p.m. At least they are boing realistic by saying the second match is at 730, instead of 7. which rarely happens anyway. but what that means is, because of TV, the second match will not start any earlier than 730. Why not start at 4 p.m. or even 430 and have the Wahine go at 7 p.m.?
Anyway, enough rants for an early morning. here is the schedule.
