Warrior rewind

Think it was a very winnable match for UH. They got stuck in a couple of bad rotations, one where Ramos is in the front row, and with Kanetake in the back, really limited the offensive choices.

Mol is going to be a very good player.  Olsen needs to work on his serve-receive.

anyway, stat-wise Zarkovic and Olsen each with 13, West with 9.

Warriors ended up getting outblocked 12.5-8.5. UCLA with 8 blocks in Set 4.

all-tournmanet team: UCLA: Robart Page (MVP), Gonzalo Quiroga and Steve O'Dell; Hawaii's Siki Zarkovic and Nick West; Nick Goodell of Penn State and Driss Guessous of Ohio State

Hawaii last won this event in 2010. Warriors haven't started 3-0 since 2003.

Agree that this was winnable, I don't think UCLA is unbeatable and I certainly think UH can beat them twice in the MPSF next month.

I think UCLA won this with their serving !It made Ramos even more predictable and he wasn't able to set West or Averill much after set 2. Plus UCLA's star was awesome and UH's was not. Not sure what is going on with the Sedore and Ramos connection but they need to get that worked out.
I wish Wade would have made some substitutions and gotten Franciskovic in for Ramos ( just a huge blocking liability) and Fey for Olsen when his passing and hitting stalled. Olsen got way too many sets tonight and he was ineffective in all but set 2 (He should never be the player with the most attempts on this team)

Next weeks matches are must win. I am tired of UH losing to Long Beach State.

It seems that Wade is not much of a talker or motivator on the sidelines. He timeout management needs improvement as well. The media and Wade all said that there is major depth on this team...why not use it....oh well just my thoughts....season is early. UH has the guys to be a good team the coach just needs to get with it.

  3. rayson:

Serving and serve receive cost them the match tonight. I think Wade wanted to see how the starters respond to being down so he didn't really go to his bench. I can see his reasoning but I thought that 4th set a perfect opportunity to play his bench.

Overall I did see a lot that I liked this tournament. Kanetake and Olsen have exceeded my expectations. Mol, Franciskovic and Fey are all going to be fantastic. West and Averill are going to be imposing middles, something Hawaii hasn't really had for awhile. And Siki is simply amazing. The only thing that really worries me right now is Sedore. He failed to show up two of the three nights.

    2. Wade has ALWAYS been that way on the sidelines...past seasons he spent more time at timeouts huddled with his staff than with his players. I agree, season is early but now's the time to see what works against teams you'll be seeing down the road. He has never impressed me and I am hoping this is his last season at UH...I think this is the last year of his contract.

  5. Close Up On Cindy:

The Kiwi in for Sedore (I've not ever thought the Canadian able to carry a team from the get go).

Shoji SHOULD agree to the 2014 AVCA Showcase this next season.
IF and only if they don't have to meet up with NU in the semis, I'd go ahead and agree to it.

    UH vs. Stanford
    Nebraska vs. Florida State

    Winners vs. Winners
    Losers vs. Losers

  6. Geno Tamayo:

    5. Where would the 2014 AVCA Showcase be at?

  7. vbfan:

#4 It is Wade's last contract year but I believe Stephen Tsai has said that he will get an extension it just hasn't been announced yet.

  8. vballfreak808:

    Warriors ranked 10 this week

  9. Cindy Luis:

    6. AVCA showcase in Lincoln, Neb.

  10. Cindy Luis:

    7. don't know if he's getting an extension.

  11. Cindy Luis:

    4. they went 2-1 to open. vast improvement over the previous years. Think they showed what they could do in Set 2 against UCLA when serving is on and they made the UCLA setter predictable, as happened with Ramos in the later stages.
    3. agree with you. Think he was seeing if his starters could come back, as they did against Penn State the night before.
    It's early.

    9.
Correct. I'd also presume that Nebraska would then return as a 1st/last to one of the preseason tourneys,,,Shoji's final 2014 run in the SSC.

  13. Cindy Luis:

    12. we don't know that Shoji is retiring after this year. Only thing is that he is coaching through 2014 season.

  14. karmady:

This is essentially the same team that beat UCLA in last year's Outrigger, with the exception of Matt Cheape. What happened?

  15. Cindy Luis:

    14. Then you also have to say it's essentially the same team that lost to Ohio State and Penn State in last year's OHVI, teams they beat this year.
Hardly the same team as last year vs. UCLA. they also had Marks and Holt as starters. UCLA had only 3 of the same starters as last year so quite a difference in match ups.
Last year, UH had 9 aces 18 SEs. This year, they had 1 ace, 12 SEs.
This was a winnable match. UCLA played better at the end.

  16. karmady:

Yabbut, Ohio State didn't have a bunch of freshmen playing last year. You're right about Marks and Holt, Marks seems so long ago. My bad! But UCLA returned most of their top players, no? ...and Penn State graduated five seniors. Ah well, I guess it only really matters during conference play. Hopefully by then Wade will have figured it out. Not optimistic though.

  17. Cindy Luis:

    16. yabbut … can't have it both ways. different season, different teams, different match ups. For all 4 teams.
As I said, UCLA played 3 players who played against UH last year.
UH's lineup more than missing Cheape. Holt and Marks not in there as they were last season.
and, agree, what matters is the season.

  18. karmady:

I'm not being a smartass, honest, but my point (which wasn't clear) was UH was pretty young last year, Ohio State wasn't, same w/Penn State, hence the losses. UCLA only returned 3 from last year and beat an arguably more-seasoned team, though agree Cheape, Marks and Holt were certainly missed this year.

  19. Cindy Luis:

I know you're not. but when you said it was basically the same team minus Cheape … I don't feel it was.
Plus it went 5 last year, as did UH's matches with OSU and PSU. Warriors could have gone 0-3, 3-0, 2-1, 1-2. and they were 1-2

  20. karmady:

I guess I'm just bummed the Warriors didn't win the tournament, when I really felt, as you did, it was very winnable. But, on to conference play! GO 'BOWS!
