Shoji et al

December 30th, 2013

Birthday weekend present to myself … stepped away from the computer so no email or blog.  As for THE announcement

Shoji tweeted it while in Europe to spend the holidays with his sons early Saturday morning Hawaii time (around 1:30 a.m.)

Dave Reardon also had a column in Sunday's paper about it.

Scott Robbs this morning discussed naming the SSC court for Shoji the opening match of the season. Like the idea.

I also hope that when Shoji does retire that he'll do it as Al Scates did with enough notice in order to do a farewell tour around the league and be appreciated.  I know there are several non-conference coaches who said they would come out to play as part of his final season.

    Cindy,

Do you know how many years left under his current contract? I'm guessing he'll work through the end of it.

I agree it would be great if he announces it in advance to get the ackolades he deserves.

shoji's such a competitor. i wouldn't want to end my tenure in the 2nd round of the tournament either. he's got some good recruits coming in. this next year will be a rebuild. but maybe there's at least another final four run left in shoji's arsenal.

  3. Reggie:

Yes would be nice for Dave to give a farewell tour, just as Mariano Rivera done so. Dave would do us well to find a hand picked successor. Maybe ask that tall coach at UCLA to come back to Hawaii and coach us. I forgot his name, the coach who was an assistant at UH to Dave, went to UCLA and won a national title there. Or maybe someone else.

  4. Cindy Luis:

For one thing, it's not up to Shoji to make the final decision. I'm sure he'll have input but that's not how UH's process works.
Mike Sealy is who you're thinking of.

  5. vbfan:

Yeah, they have to follow proper hiring procedures. Mike Wilton wanted Tino Reyes to be his successor, and the committee basically said, thanks, but no thanks.

  6. Cindy Luis:

    1. Shoji's last extension has him going through 2014-15 school year. so this season.

  7. Cindy Luis:

    5. Wilton had his input, as will Shoji. Wilton's choice was Reyes. didn't happen, obviously.
but i know of at least one case where a past AD went against the committee's recommendation.

  8. Andrew:

Well whoever it is that takes over when Shoji retires has a very tough task. The expectations with this program are so high that I don't think the fan base is patient enough to go through multiple rebuilding years.

Happy belated birthday Cindy! Us December babies are in a good place.

  10. Cindy Luis:

    9. thank you. we are special '-)
Being a Capricorn and a Horse makes for an interesting combination.

I remember asking Coach Shoji when he was on Stephen's video chat a couple of years ago, what he wanted named after him. I think he said a locker room or something weird, but the court would be a good idea.

  12. abacaxi:

Happy birthday! You deserved the present to yourself.

    10. a horse I am too, something wonderful maybe in store for us next year.

  14. LC:

Dave returning was a no brainier all the signs were there when he made several inadvertent comments during the season that pointed to his return but I do love the way he announced it.

A safe and a Happy New Year, Cindy!

I first met Emily Maeda and Hartong when they were true freshmen at a Lions Club meeting.

I had the honor of sitting next Hartong whom I thought was very cute, polite, and very soft spoken. Maeda who was across from me was the same, IMHO.

After dinner, I asked Maeda how she was able to get a 4.3 GPA when 4.0 is the general rule. Then, I realized that she was taking "advance placement" or "honors" classes at UH
Now, 4 years later, both have evolved into very attractive women with very special volleyball skills and a college degree to boot!

I wish both very successful lives in whatever they choose to pursue and many, many thanks for selecting UH as their choice of school!
