  1. Brandon:

Ucsb vs northridge match currently tied at 2 sets a piece. Going to the fifth set

  2. Kazu:

    Northridge and UCSB going 5.

  3. Volleyball fan:

Who should we root to win, UCSB or Northridge?

  4. Brandon:

    3. Depends. If you want uh second then northridge but if you want first ucsb because then uh has a chance to take it if both of them lose two more matches

  5. hossana:

I guess all those that said Missouri hasn't proven itself should back off because all Missouri does is win and their victory over Florida is no fluke. With the two local girls on the first team, I am deeply happy for the team and certainly, hope Hawaii doesn't have to face them in the post-season, well, not until the Final Four.

  6. Brandon:

    5. I agree. I was very critical if Missouri and thought their undefeated streak was a fluke but I was proven wrong. They are a strong team and are gonna give teams like penn state and washignton fits if they face them

  7. Brandon:

    Ucsb up 12-6

  8. Brandon:

Ucsb wins the fifth set 15-12

  9. Maverick:

Now UH has to beat Northridge and hope Long Beach beats UCSB. Then, assuming no other losses by UH, CSUN, or UCSB, then a three-way tie for first place.

  10. Volleyball fan:

Well, Brandon, you got what you wanted. Now UH has to win all the rest of its matches and the biggest challenge is next week. Then Long Beach has to beat UCSB on the last Friday of regular season. Long Beach did it once on UCSB home court and they'll have to do it again against a revenge minded team. Then three times will tie for first place with three losses and the NCAA will have to send all of them to the playoffs. Next weekend is the make-it-or-break-it weekend.

  11. Brandon:

    10. The big west has a tie breaker rule. It's super complicated and I forget how it works. It's like when the tie made who was first and wins percentage. I remember reading it and being utterly confused

  12. Brandon:

And remember northridge has to beat Davis. Davis took them to five their first match

  13. LC:

UC Davis hasn't been playing well lately,on a 4 match losing streak, kinda lost their mojo.

  14. Brandon:

13 hopefully they can pull it together. Do you know what the tie breaker rule is?

  15. LC:

Haven't looked into tie breaker yet, thought I would wait until we get to that point.

  16. LC:

Section 20.14 isn't all that complicated but there are still too many scenarios left and it just creates a whole bunch of if this or that happens then this will happen.

It will be easier to sort out in a couple of weeks.

  17. Warriorfan:

That stinkin loss to Davis really hurts.

  18. Volleyball fan:

First of all, UCSB has a two-win advantage over Northridge. So the tiebreaker would apply between UH and UCSB. Each team won in five sets.

    UH lost to UCSB : L 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12
    UH beat UCSB: W 22-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12

The scores almost mirror each other and there was no extended play. So add up how many points each team accumulated in losing sets:
    UH accumulated a total of: 21 + 22 + 12 + 22 + 23 = 100
    UCSB accumulated a total of: 21 + 22 + 22 + 15 + 12 = 91

So UH accumulated a few more points. If they go by point differential, then UH wins the tiebreaker. So UH has to win all its matches and UCSB needs to lose one more match and then UH wins the tiebreaker.

  19. jmy:

UCSB still has the Beach at the Pyramid...the 49ers look to be building up steam at just the right time...

  20. Brandon:

So if uh can sweep northridge and ucsb looses to long beach hawaii wins the tie breaker?

  21. pacesetterhawaii:

20 that's how I see it too. UH has to win all their matches and beat NOrthridge in 3 or 4.

  22. pacesetterhawaii:

Very imperative that UCSB will lose at Long Beach. Right now, UCSB has the best chance of being the Big West Champion.

  23. vbfan4life:

not that it will happen, but wouldn't it be nice to see 3-4 Big West teams post season? UH, UCSB, CSUN, LBSU

  24. Volleyball fan:

    21. You're basically right, but if Northridge takes it to five sets, then Hawaii would have to win on a point differential. Still, UCSB has the advantage over Northridge, so it really gets complicated here. I think that all three teams should make it to the playoffs if they end up sharing the #1 spot. Since Hawaii is ranked higher overall, it should get an easier opponent than the other two even if Hawaii gets an at-large berth only.

  25. Brandon:

    24. Ahh I see. Northridge will be a tough match but I think they can win at home. Plus it's senior night so the girls will be even more fired up.

  26. OrbitalripZ:

It's getting curiouser and curiouser. Pac-12's Washington, USC, and Stanford are all going to be seeded and thus host a subregional.

Add San Diego, unless it loses the WCC conference crown to BYU. Add undefeated Colorado State. That means 5 of the 16 available seeds are going to West schools -- though this does not necessarily mean all of the above subregional hosts will be placed in the USC regional bracket.

Now comes the Big West, which nearly everyone expected would have only 1 school being in the NCAA Championship before the Conference Season began.

So here's one scenario -- and I think a very likely one for the Volleyball [Selection] Committee should UH fail to secure the automatic berth.

The BWC champ gets the automatic berth, while the two runners-up receive at-large bids. But here's the kicker: because 3 Big West schools will be in the 64-team field, that means 2 BCS "bubble" teams will be out of the tournament.

So the trade off is to award bids (but not seeds) to 3 Big West schools and to seed a BCS "bubble" team instead. In other words, the Big West gets 3 schools in the NCAA Championship but none is seeded in the top 16, while the BCS gets 2 less "bubble" schools invited to the 64-team field but gets an additional team seeded among the top 16.

Nothing but endless and baseless speculation at this point. Lol.

  27. Lina:

If there's a 3 way tie for first place in the conference, UCSB has the tie-breaker over both Hawaii and CSUN! The only way for Hawaii to win it, is to hope that UCSB loses more than just one match. This is unlikely, but I guess you never know.

That said, just gotta hope that Hawaii and UCSB win out the rest of the season and that CSUN loses ONLY to Hawaii. Main thing is that the Wahine's RPI stays where it's at. AND hope that the Big West can get three teams into the Tourney this year!

For the record if there was a three way tie for first, Hawaii would finish 2nd in the conference, above CSUN. If it's any consolation.

  28. kimo browner:

Gaucho Coach Nicole Welch is the buzz in the BWC. The first year coach from U Miami is no fluke. She restarted the Hurricane program and took them deep into post season regional play. She is doing the same at UCSB. Gauhco's swept the Matador series and she will h

  29. tommui:

    GOOD MORNING ALL!

Hope you get (got) over that cold, Cindy!

  30. Cindy Luis:

    27. No Lina, UH has the tiebreak on UCSB on Point Differential. 213-207. that 25-15 set last week was huge.
at the moment, CSUN has a 118-115 edge on points over UH.
    See new thread.

  31. Cindy Luis:

Agree, the tiebreak not that confusing.
    first, head to head
second sets W vs. sets L
third, points scored vs. points given up (point differential)
fourth, I believe, is looking at the next team in the standings
At the moment that would be Long Beach State at No. 4. UH has the tiebreak over the 49ers,
UCSB still has to play at the Beach. 49ers won 3-2 at UCSB
CSUN has defeated the Beach twice.

  32. hollycow:

    32. LC, I agree about the fluke, and about the coach, not great but an upgrade from Gregory. Their win here was a fluke, what they gained was confidence, surely not as talented comparing players to UH, LBS and Northridge. Next season will prove my point, I don't see them ending up higher than 4th.

  33. Cindy Luis:

enough with the derogatory comments about the coaches.

  34. LC:

Why are always kissing up the the enemy , I don't get it .

  35. hollycow:

Next season Hawaii won't be the unanimous favorite in the coaches pre-season poll as this year with the grad of Hartong and the other 6 seniors, but UH will surprise all, as I see them as a stronger team next season with a vocal leader on the court with Tayler Higgins. I wouldn't be surprised if they ran the table on the BW.

  36. Cindy Luis:

    34. doing no such thing.

  37. Lina:

    Wow, Cindy I stand corrected.

I am pleasantly surprised that the Wahine still have a chance at getting the conference bid, as long as UCSB loses at LBSU, or whomever, AND of course if the Wahine don't get upset again.

I'll be rooting for LBSU, but at the same time, it may be in the best interests of the conference to have UCSB win out, and get 3 teams in the NCAAs. But still, if that were to happen no guarantee for CSUN, barring them not getting the automatic bid. Hawaii, at this point is a pretty safe bet, barring another shocking loss to like UCF or UC Riverside. :p
