Hartong wins another weekly BWC honor

September 23rd, 2013
By

Senior hitter Emily Hartong picked up her second Big West women's volleyball player of the week in four weeks today. It was the third for a Rainbow Wahine this month; senior setter Mita Uiato was honored last week.

Hartong averaged 4.18 kills and 3.09 digs en route to the MVP honors at the Shocker Volleyball Classic. The Rainbow Wahine defeated South Dakoto, No. 23 Creighton and Wichita State.

Hartong hit .284 (46-13-116) for the tournament with double-figure kills in each match and double-doubles in two of them.  She had a match-high 20 kills on .311 hitting (20-6-45) while adding 16 digs and a pair of service aces against the Bluejays, helping UH to its third win over a ranked opponent this year.

She opened the tournament with 13 kills, 13 digs and three blocks against South Dakota.  Hartong also swung at a .278 clip with 13 kills in the finale against Wichita State. She leads the Big West in kills per set (4.70).

    Congrats to Emily.

    Congrats Emily. Well deserved.

  3. jt:

    Well deserved.. well loved.

  4. OrbitalRipZ:

Current (includes all 9/22 matches) NCAA D1 national statistics for Hartong:

    #10 Kills Per Set

    #11 Points Per Set

    #113 Aces Per Set

(Only the top 150 players are listed. Surprised that Vorster is no longer among the top hitting percentage leaders. Adolpho comes in at #20 in this category.)

  5. vbfan:

#3 Probably because Vorster doesn't have enough hitting attempts to qualify. They need to set her more when she's hitting almost .500

if Hawaii takes care of business in their conference, Im hoping the NCAA selection folks will "gift" Coach Shoji with a region...this could be his final year. No one is more deserving, no one has earned more consideration, no one would bemoan the wahine for earning a pole position in the post season playoffs.

  9. kimo browner:

here's a look at the top-5 schedule this week:

    #1 Penn State--home against #10 Mich and #15 MSU.

    #2 WASH-@ WSU and @ #20 Oregon

#3 Florida @ Miss St and @ Ole Miss

#4 USC home against #11 UCLA @ Utah

#5 Texas @ TCU, home against Oklahoma

  10. setaone:

Tomorrow on PAC-12 Networks they are showing Arizona-ASU. I know people don't want to hear "her" name, but it will be a good chance to watch "her" play again.

  11. Kazu:

    # 9 What time is that Arizona/ASU match ?

  12. setaone:

    10. I believe 5pm Hawaii time.

  13. hollycow:

    10. 5:00 HST and Kamehameha at Punahou 7:00 OC16.

  14. hollycow:

Watch Makenna Granato UH verbal recruit for 2015.

  15. Hot:

    4. I think you're right. There's a minimum number of attempts required to be ranked.

  16. Kazu:

    # 11-12 Thanks, will watch.

  17. vbfan:

Good chance to empty the bench this weekend against Fullerton and Riverside. Tai won't play in the Sunday match against Riverside, but it won't matter. They might be the worst team to come into the SSC this season.

  18. mei mei:

16- they may be able to play ponce even...

thanks also for the info as far as who to watch games this week :)

  19. hollycow:

Need a minimum of 3.33 attempts per set.

  20. po'okela:

    granato verballed to hawaii?

  21. Purple&Gold:

Cindy knows a little more about how the season pans out should the Bows actually receive a seed.
Remember last Winter/Spring when Shoji had those talks with the NCAA selection folks??
Nobody has said anything about them.
    ---
    Wasn't Deitre in on "hosting"?

Balboa Park Muni Gym was the center that I thought was being considered, its history of vb.
The issue, in seating for events, was being looked at.
    ;-)

  22. roofer68:

    19. Per prepvolleyball.com Sept 7.

  23. Purple&Gold:

    Cindy,
Was that the Municipal Gymnasium, again
    OR
    BPAC??

    Anybody else?

  24. Warriorfan:

    Is the Kam/Punahou match tomorrow?

  25. Hanaleipoi:

Yes kam vs pun tomorrow Tuesday sept. 24 on oc16 at 7p. I believe kam comes into this game being favored. Kam just returned this past weekend from the durango fall classic in Vegas and finished 2nd in the field of 64 teams. They lost in the championship game to Torrey pines 26-24, 23-25 and 26-24, who I believe is ranked #1. That would put kam possibly in the top 5-10 in the nation. Should still be an awesome game with Granato on the other side of the net.

  26. hollycow:

    23. There's a ILH doubleheader, St Francis vs University at 5pm then the second match scheduled at 7pm, Kam/Puns.

  27. hollycow:

    23. Forgot yes Tuesday.

  28. hossana:

It will not be a cakewalk in the Big West Conference as the Wahine have a target on their backs and every team will come at the Wahine with everything they got and I think Shoji knows it and I do hope the team knows it, too, and doesn't become lackadaisical because of the preseason records of the BW teams. Plez don't jump to conclusions and say Shoji should play this person and give that person a shot...stick with what got him and the team this far and when things seem to be in control, then he can sub liberally giving other players that opportunity to exemplify their skills. Trust me, it will not be a cakewalk and so every match will be a contest and I do hope the Wahine can pull it out......I think Long Beach & UCSB will definitely be tough opponents, also.

  29. hollycow:

Dave Shoji has been doing this for 39 years and 1,114 wins later I'm sure he, the rest of the coaches, the whole team, Kaleo, Jimbo, Kayla, the Japan assistant and maybe even the ball girls and floor wipers knows all about the target on the teams back.

  30. wop ur jaws:

    its kamehameha vs Punahou.

  31. Grammy:

What I miss the most from the Klum Gym days was the coaches who claimed the "Hawaii effect" that is two tough games played back to back nights in Klum Gym then they'd go back "home" and lose one or two there. So if they were having a good season, bam out the door and limp to NCAA. Of course, no one ever wondered how Coach Dave and the Wahine managed to win doing the opposite (playing games on the continent then returning to Hawaii). But now, it's "great experience for the team to play in Hawaii's atmosphere", etc. etc. I think that Coach Dave is well versed in keeping his teams/players focused he's done it in the BW, WAC and last year back in the BW. He will do it again, target or not the other teams will have to outplay the Wahine. Not saying they can't but it's easier said than done. Go Wahine!

  32. Maverick:

Another web site has the following link to one person's estimate of current RPI:

    http://ohiomcginn.dyndns-at-home.com/ncaastats/volleyball-rpi.cgi#

This is not the official RPI calculation, but if the person who developed this knows his math, it is revealing.

Using the unmodified RPI calculation, UH is #2 behind Texas.
    Other UH opponents:
    1. Texas
    5. Creighton
    6. San Diego
    8. UCLA
    31. Arizona
    34. Wichita State
    41. Santa Clara
    64. Northwestern
    76. South Dakota
    108. Portland State
    150. New Mexico State
    194. UTEP

Seven top 50 RPI opponents so far. Not bad.

Now let's look at the Big West:
    35. Northridge
    39. Irvine
    77. Cal Poly
    94. Davis
    115. UCSB
    121. Fullerton
    135. Long Beach (really?)
    310. Riverside (ugh!)

A couple of top 50 teams, and then there's Riverside.

Finally, for those interested in the Old WAC, here are those teams' RPIs:
    68. Utah State
    113. Idaho
    117. Fresno State
    172. Boise State
    176. NMSU
    264. SJSU
    274. Nevada
    287. Louisiana Tech

From an RPI perspective, I'm glad UH is no longer part of the Old WAC.

  33. vbfan:

Good article on Adora Anae in today's paper. It says she committed to Utah, but Hawaii is still recruiting her. She also seems to be having a difficult time deciding if she should stay home or go away.

We'll see where she eventually signs with in November I guess.

  34. Warriorfan:

I think Anae is a nice player. I think she would be a redshirt her first year and has potential to be real good in 3-4 years. but with Granato and Castillo possibly on board I hope uh goes for an outside hitter transfer with experience instead and ready to play right away next season.

  35. po'okela:

    can someone post the article

  36. tako:

May I request 32, who is Castillo? -thanks

  37. po'okela:

assumption is, she's the girl who was here on her unofficial visit. if Anae does stay I don't see her getting a scholarship.

  38. mei mei:

    33. if you have on-line access:

  39. po'okela:

if I had a subscription I wouldn't have asked to see the article.

  40. vbfan:

#37 maybe Cindy can post it. Don't want to post it since it's behind the paywall.

What I said earlier is the gist of it though.

  41. roofer68:

    34. tako. Casey Castillo, class of 2015, Santa Fe Christian High, San Diego, 6'3", RS/OH. Was her with her mom, watched all three matches with Portland St, Northwestern, and Arizona. Attended the post match potluck with boosters, coaches and team.

  42. tako:

Thanks 39, missed that one, discovered was listed on the South Dakota thread five days ago. Hope Wahine and program impressed enough for her to at the very least give a Verbal. -thanks again - Wahine will win in three on Friday....

  43. LC:

As far as I can tell Castillo hasn't played in a match so far this year. She is on the roster but isn't listed in any of the stats for any of their matches for this season.

I heard she's been was wearing a brace on her right leg. A 6'2 freshman named Lexi Sun has replaced her.

  44. Warriorfan:

Lexi Sun is the next logan tom apparently she touches 10'5 already as a freshman and passes and plays defense very well.

  45. Cindy Luis:

    7. it won't be a regional, those are pre-set. It is first and second rounds that are on the line.

  46. Cindy Luis:

    22. would you be more specific about your question? host what? why would muni be considered for anything?

  47. Cindy Luis:

16 Shoji said he was treating Wednesday as a true exhibition, so they will use a lot of people. They should use most everyone Sunday as well. UCR is 1-11

  48. wop ur jaws:

Dear Robyn please recruit Alohi Robins Hardy...watching her and her team mates on TV right now and I am very impressed with her maturity. Kamehameha just came back from The Curango Classic and took runner up out of 64 teams. Alohi please sign with UH. Mahalo.

  49. Cindy Luis:

sorry but doubt either Am How-Santos or the Robins-Hardy ohana read this blog.

  50. Ki:

Being an exhibition, does that mean red-shirts are allowed to play

  51. Warriorfan:

It's really surprising to me that Robins-Hardy hasn't committed anywhere yet with signing day just over a month away. She's a big talent.

Really impressed with Mckenna Granato's powerful armswing and she can dig and pass pretty good too, Shoji will do wonders with her.

  52. Cindy Luis:

    50. don't think you'll see redshirts. this is the chance for the current players to get some court time.

  53. wop ur jaws:

they may not read your blog, but i'm pretty sure someone who knows either of them does read this blog.

    CONFERENCE OPENING WEEK/WEEKEND
~ From the WHO CARES! Department ~

As the conference season begins, crosstown a.k.a. interstate rivalries are featured, and the Pac-12 is legendary for these rivalries. But (with few exceptions) it is already shaping up to be an upset-free week, even though the first week of conference play traditionally produces large applecarts being upset.

    9/24 (Tue)
Arizona @ [#16] Arizona St -- unfortunately, the Cats got swept as Madi Kingdon was held to .022, Croson to .107 ... obviously I say "unfortunately" not cuz I am a Sun Devils fan but because Arizona's W-L record affects UH's RPI

    9/25 (Wed)
    [#1] Washington @ Washington St
    [#11] UCLA @ [#4] USC
    [#7] Stanford @ [#32] California
[#21] Oregon @ Oregon St -- hard to believe that just a few weeks ago Oregon was #8

The Big Ten will showcase this week's only fight among two Top 10 schools:

    9/28 (Sat)
    [#10] Michigan @ [#1] Penn State

Think this week I will be watching a lot of football instead.

  55. LC:

    48. Alohi Robins Hardy-WOW, yes totally agree !

  56. OrbitalRipZ:

Re: 54 Just not into this . . . Meant "crosstown a.k.a. INTRASTATE" ... Meant "obviously I say 'unfortunately' not cuz I am a Cats fan" ... But who cares! lol

  57. mei mei:

    orbital 54/56 thanks! - I find it interesting !
