Hawaii senior hitter Emily Hartong was named the Big West player of the week in women's volleyball today, her fifth BWC honor since the Rainbow Wahine changed conferences last year.

The 6-2 outside hitter had 18 kills, seven digs and two blocks in Friday's upset of No. 1 Texas. She also ended up as the MVP of the Chevron Wahine Rainbow Invitational, following up with 14 kills and seven digs in the sweep of UTEP and 30 kills with 12 digs in the five-set loss to San Diego.

For the three matches, she hit .356, averaging 5.17 kills and 2.17 digs.

She also became the 18th player in program history to reach 1,000 kills, doing so on Friday early in Set 4 against the Longhorns. Her 62 kills in the tournament moved her to No. 17 on UH's career list with 1,049.

The first of many this season. Congrats Emily.

  2. LanaiBoy:

Hartong is rapidly becoming one of the frontrunners for the National Player of the Year award. Agreed that is a long, long ways off. She has a real advantage in that Oceanic Cablevision makes available Hawaii's match on-line live and in re-play. Lots of people watch Hawaii's matches across the country because of the high quality of the broadcast (equal or surpasses national broadcasts). One Volley Talker jokingly wondered whether the national team should draft Hartong immediately from the college ranks. He was really impressed by Hartong's ability to slam the ball from all points of the court in the Texas match.

  3. RedZone:

Congrats to Emily. No doubt in my mind. Best player on the court.

Congrats to Em. Bitter sweet I know, but knowing Em, I'm sure she would trade it for a win last nite.

Note: Even with the loss, Emily has a good chance to have the National Player of the Week, even with the loss, has been awarded before. Hope the SID submits, Emily deserves it, she definitely left it all on the court this past weekend.

    congrats Hartong :)

  6. LC:

National POW is submitted by the conference and unlike the WAC they actually do it.

  7. Dedicatedfan:

CONGRATS, EM. But knowing Em, she would have traded in the award, for a WIN against USD.

Cindy, if you watch the replay, at one point in Set 3, Emily did sort of yell at her teammates. You could tell by her facial expression she was not happy the funk the rest of the players were in. She was trying her best to get them out of that funk they were in. Now that is a mark of a TRUE CAPTAIN, and LEADER of the TEAM.

  9. wop ur jaws:

    Emily cannot do it alone.

All the outside hitters has to get into the fighting spirit.

  11. mei mei:

as the symbolism of the chime presented by Ah Mow... they need to be ONE - cohesive, aiming for that common goal ~ which I know they will do :)

  12. LC:

LOL,chimes? Whats next Yoda giving a speech on the Force ?

  13. Dedicatedfan:

    12. Actually, that chime was given to the Team, by someone who they brought in to give a speech about, their need to be ONE - cohesive unit, aiming for that common goal.

They have not been a volleyball player who have played middle blocker all high school and two years in college to become in my opinion one of the top outside hitters in the country. She was so much more athletic than the 2 All Americans from Texas. She is fierce, tough hard worker! You Go Emily!
