No. 11 Hawaii 3, No. 1 Texas 1
August 30th, 2013

Should be a very entertaining match for the fans. Texas is very athletic and I expect great defense from both teams. TV may get the lineup before we do

don't know if livestreaming has started. TV is doing its pre game.

but the live stats won't start before the match does.

  1. Cindy Luis:

to recap the end. Texas served for the Set at 24-22.Webster hit outside the atenna then UH ties it at 24. tied at 25. Taylor and Adolpho blocked Webster giving UH set point. Hartong with her 12th kill ends it.

  2. Cindy Luis:

DF, oh please. i can see BWC FOY for Taylor.

  3. Dedicatedfan:

Cindy, do they not have like a Freshmen All-American Team?

  4. Cindy Luis:

Sorry but ends I have to start writing a story in case this goes past our 10 p.m. deadline. so will try to update as much as possible. bare with me.

  5. Cindy Luis:

not playing well with the crowd. . Hartong with a tap back block called for a net. . Texas now up 9-7. could be a very key play.

  6. Cindy Luis:

DF no, no freshmen a-a team.

  7. Cindy Luis:

    Tickets 9806, turnstile 8639

  8. Cindy Luis:

big block on Victoria gives UH a 14-12 lead. TO Texas

  9. mei mei:

ok this is in makings of a major upset ... I hope not only the country takes notice, but the voting committee --- wahines here we COME!!!! WOOO HOO!!!!!!

  10. Beauston:

Likes the fact that Mendoza is paying her dues when Shoji gave her the chance. Olevao will be a monster halfway this season.

  11. Cindy Luis:

    UH up 20-14.

  12. Cindy Luis:

    Kawamura ace makes it 22-15.

  13. Cindy Luis:

    Texas hits long 23-15

  14. Cindy Luis:

    wahine win 25-16

  15. Dedicatedfan:

THE NCAA TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE BETTER TAKE NOTICE. NO WAY THE WAHINES TRAVELING FOR THE 1ST AND 2ND ROUND THIS YEAR!!!!!

  16. mei mei:

Absolutely proud of you Ladies!!!! congrats team and coach & staff!!! wow!

  17. Redzone:

What a game. Way to go Wahine.

  18. Dedicatedfan:

The Middles will play a BIG role this year. The have improved so much. Uiato has improved so much with her connections with the Middles. What can you say about Adolpho, monster match. Really BRIGHT things ahead for Nikki Taylor. Olevao is blossoming into a real threat on the LS.

  19. Beauston:

Key player for the match-Uiato and Longo.

  20. Beauston:

    Players*

  21. Dedicatedfan:

Robyn Ah-Mow Santos, working with Uiato, is paying off this year, you can see it. There is that confidence in Uiato, that was not there before.

  22. Dedicatedfan:

The good thing about this match, the Wahines still need things to work on. They did not play a completely 100% error free match.

  23. volleyball fan:

Congratulations, Rainbow Wahines for upsetting #1 Texas!

You were right, Cindy, in one of your former blogs that Hawaii was capable of upsetting Texas. I remembered very well you said that. Few of us believed it was possible.

Now, let's pray that Hawaii does not let up or let down the rest of the season. If the Wahines play with consistency they can beat every team until playoff time. I bet the whole team was still mad that didn't get to host the first round of the playoffs last year. Goal is an undefeated season. Then the NCAA can't send the team away. Key is consistency.

  24. Dedicatedfan:

Who would have thought the Wahines would out block the TALLER Texas team, 10-8.

  25. Redzone:

Adolpho so much improved. She looks a lot quicker. Longo was all over the place. Uiato was smooth and in control. Hartong was the best player on the court. Biggest surprise was Nikki. Can't be a freshman.

  26. Beauston:

Good morning from DC. Mahalo for a great game.

  27. K-Bay:

    Outstanding!

The Confidence and Poise of The Freshmen and Sophomores was Unprecedented...

Upper Classmen moved This Year's Team to The TOP of the Class...

The Queen is Dead, Long Live the Queen...

A NEW Emerging Challenger for Number One....

    NOW Demonstrate CONSISTENCY...

    Na Wahine No Ka Oi!

  28. LAN:

Stated earlier on line that for this team to be great....everything must start in the middle to set up the outside hitters. Sorry wahine's, didn't think you could win tonight...but you did....great job, coaches and player's.

  29. Think2Much:

The win was huge. Equally impressive was Nikki Taylor's post game interview. She exudes maturity and intelligence beyond her freshman years. Public school grad to boot. Terrific!

  30. mei mei:

Everyone looked so improved!! they seem very mid-season form already !

  31. Dedicatedfan:

Beauston, happy you were able to follow and maybe, even watch the match, all the from DC.

  32. Cindy Luis:

no official stats but Hartong 18 kills, Adolpho 11 kills and 7 blocks. Taylor 10 kills and 6 blocks, Longo with 17 digs.
sorry but have to finish some breaking stuff. will recap later. You're welcome to keep chatting

  33. Cindy Luis:

it is the first time Texas dropped their season opener when on the road since 07 and losing at Penn State. Texas doesn't go on the road much. this was the first time since 09.

  34. Dedicatedfan:

When was the last time a RS hitter had 10 kills, and 6 blocks. I definitely cannot remember. Maybe, Cindy knows.

  35. mei mei:

Agree DF... that RS (Nikki) certainly made an impact in her debut!

  36. Dedicatedfan:

I do not see Hartong having the same kind of numbers she had last year. Only reason, Uiato has a lot more weapons at her disposal this year.

  37. Grammy:

SWEET! And for those of you who don't go, that's okay the people that show up stayed til the end and enjoyed ev'ry second of it. Two more and Coach Dave will sit atop the throne all alone just where I believe he belongs. But he doesn't win games, just makes teams and players (and fans) who do win games. I do think that visiting teams are 'stunned' by crowd and then by teams resilency and finally by the scoreboard. Seniors and youngsters showed up BIG TIME tonight. Coach Dave may be crazy, but he's crazy like a fox and I think he outcoached the opposition tonight. Got the players back in focus after game 2 and brought it home with solid game 4. Go Wahine!

  38. Dedicatedfan:

Grammy, one correction, Dave needs 3 more wins to sit on top of that throne. 2 more wins will tie him.

  39. John:

Great win for the Wahine! Really impressed with the girls effort tonight. Awesome!

  40. Cindy Luis:

    24. don't know about the numbers. but kind of hard to say because UH doesn't use a true RS. Taylor had a number of kills from the left.

  41. Cindy Luis:

anyway, please see new thread. am putting up some stats.

  42. kaleiboy:

Awesome match.....however someone let Oceanic know it was impossible to get a connection to their wifi :(

  43. mauna:

Like I said in an earlier blog, there are some teams on the opposite end of the rankings, but somehow the lower team has the topper team's number. Hawaii has Texas's number.

  44. Cindy Luis:

not sure what you mean. Texas came in No. 1, Hawaii 11 in a preseason poll where no one knew who had what. not a huge gap between 1 and 11 at the moment.
would say UH has Texas' number. Longhorns won the the last time they played in Hawaii.

  45. menehune:

What a HUGE win for the Wahine and their fans. WVB around the country are taking notice this is the real deal for our Rainbows....and as an aside, a number of you keep referring to the "Wahines." Please, no "s" in the name. GO BOWS.

  46. Cindy Luis:

    Very much a signature win.
People will take notice, just as they always have, including last year's win over Stanford in the season-opening tournament. Not to spoil anyone's morning but it is sooooo early in the season. Consider that Stanford finished No. 1 in the RPI last year, the Pac-12 first or second in the RPI as a conference, but it wasn't enough to keep Hawaii in the Top 16 in order to host first-second round. There is way too much volleyball yet to be played and Hawaii has no control over how its opponents will fare or how their opponents' opponents will fare, which all plays into the RPI.
All Hawaii can do is keep winning and hope the teams they beat keep winning as well.

  47. Msrpantoja1@Huh.'A'loha:

    Congrats EVERYbody!!

This whole season WILL end up being a very real chess match for Dave.
Hope it all comes together in the end; they could (but not likely) go undefeated until then.

Arizona is way off the radar but they'll surprise MANY as the season progresses. Hopefully it won't be UH.

I'm esp. intrested in their game against U of AZ, now.
*Should their setting come together--their weakness--it'll be tough.
Their roster is stacked with VBM Fab50 selections.

ARod, after leaving the Mariners years back, would always get heck when he returned to play with the Yankees. He left purely for money.
