Sand volleyball fundraiser on Sept 8

Hope the name doesn't offend anyone. Told Wong I wasn't offended but he did change it from the original Portagee.

The University of Hawaii Sand Volleyball program will host the inaugural Portuguese Horseshoe Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 8 at Hunakai Park in Kahala. It's 2:30-6 pm. The concept is throwing large washers into a box instead of horseshoes toward a stake.

The fundraiser will include a meet-and-greet with coaches and players, volleyball demos, heavy pupus and drinks, and a chance to win great prizes.

Those interested in attending can register online at http://uhalumni.org/s/1220/uhfTemplate/event.aspx?sid=1220&gid=1&pgid=1434&content_id=1514 or by sending in a completedregistration form. You can also directly contribute to the sand volleyball program through Na Koa at https://giving.uhfoundation.org/give/giving-gift.aspx?allocation=12600204&site=AKA. All donations will be matched up to $25,000. Supporters can also donate prizes.

For more information call Danny Alvarez at (808)394-7650 or email Sandvb@hawaii.edu.

  1. Grammy:

How is the progress going on the on campus sand facilities? Any news? I'd like to see this component of the Wahine programs take off this year, so much potential for support here. Go Wahine!

  2. mainlandgal:

Grammy: Sand courts on the UH campus are coming along nicely. I believe the practice courts are complete, or very, very close to complete. The players are excited to have facilities on campus and are looking forward to having a lot of student support at their tournaments. GO BOWS!!!

  3. zzzzzz:

Didn't a former Wahine hail from someplace called Portage?

  4. mainlandgal:

And, to add ... good to hear that the Wahine Sand Team will be running fundraisers and such during off-season to help build the program even that much more. The 2014 Season looks very promising with approx 12-14 "sand only" players. Should make for a competitive team and a great season!!! All year long Wahine Volleyball -- doesn't get much better than that!! GO BOWS!!!

Portagee Horseshoes is fun with da washers.

    Played it out in Waimanalo.
    Part Portuguese myself.

  6. Cindy Luis:

Yes, Therese Crawford was from Portage, Mich. but that is Port-age ... not Port-a-gee.

  7. Cindy Luis:

yes, courts are coming along nicely.
