Rawson, Shojis among those on USAV world league roster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 6, 2013) – USA Volleyball has announced its 22-player roster for the 2013 FIVB World League.The World League is the premier annual men’s international volleyball tournament, where 18 teams from around the world compete over seven weeks of pool play in hopes of advancing to the Final Round on July 17-21 in Mar del Plata, Argentina and the chance to win $1 million.
John Speraw first-year head coach of the U.S. Men’s National volleyball Team, said he wants to put the focus on newer players early in the quadrennial leading up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“As we project four years down the road, we know we would like still have the contributions of proven veterans such as Reid Priddy and Clay Stanley, who aren’t on the World League roster this year," coach John Speraw said. "But veterans have to learn how to manage their training over the next four years so they can peak at the right time.”
Seven players on the 22-man roster return from the 2012 U.S. Men’s National Team that took silver at the FIVB World League and finished fifth at the Olympic Games: Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.), Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), Brian Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.), Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and David Smith (Saugus, Calif.). Lee and Lambourne also played on the 2008 U.S. Men’s National Team that won the Olympic gold medal in Beijing.
Evan Patak, Max Holt , Jayson Jablonsky and Alfee Reft have all been on rosters for major U.S. Men’s National Team events including the FIVB World League, the FIVB World Championships and the NORCECA Continental Championships.
The 11 other players on the roster have all competed on a U.S. Men’s National Team for a Pan American Cup, a Pan American Games or as part of the Junior National Team.
The U.S. Men, ranked fifth in the world, won the World League in 2008, finished second in 2012 and finished third in 2007 and 1992.
In the 2013 world League, the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team will host Argentina on June 7-8 in Wichita at Charles Koch Arena; France on June 14-15 in Tulsa at the Tulsa Convention Center Arena and Bulgaria on June 28-29 in Reno at the Reno Events Center.
The team will then travel to Poland for matches on July 5 and 7 and to Brazil for their final pool play matches on July 13-14.
