  1. Ron:

Pepperdine and LBS will be very good but I think we could be # 3. We shall see.

  2. Grammy:

It's comfortable and nice to see the company the Sand Wahine are keeping. I know they will play their hardest and fight till the last whistle. And I do hope they live up to this poll or even prove the poll wrong and rise to the top. I can only see sand results helping their indoor sisters as I'm sure the indoor team's long record of winning must reflect positively on the sand team. But as always, Go Wahine! Behind you 100%!

  3. warriorfan:

Seems a little high with Tiegs having to sit out and no Hartong. I wonder who Jane will be paired up with.

  4. Purple&Green:

    Hint, wink wink, hint, wink.

Volleyball Magazine needs to get on this on as well. They should start her up just the same also.

    VBM Top5(+3) Weekly Poll.

    Of course..
(+3) being the "also rans" / #6 thru #8, essentially

  5. Purple&Green:

    University of Hawaii
    Head coach: Scott Wong*

2012 season: The All-American duo of Jane Croson and Ashley Lee made it to the AVCA Collegiate National Championship but lost in the first round to USC’s Geena Urango and Sara Shaw. Hawaii did not qualify for the team championship and ended the season with a 4-6 overall record.
Key players: Jane Croson (So., 5'11"), Ginger Long (So., 5'11"), Katie Spieler (Fr., 5'5"), Brittany Tiegs (So., 5'9").
Putting in the time: An eight-player core of Hawaii’s large, 21-deep roster have been training in the sand since the fall when they all started classes. Three more players came onto the team after Christmas. Now, with the addition of 10 women from the indoor team, Hawaii is practicing with all 21, looking to make a statement in the second year of play. Likely we’ll see Jane Croson and whoever she’s partnered with in the pairs championship. The transfer from Florida State, Tiegs, will be a big impact player unless she’s unable to play due to transfer process complications.

    First up on the docket..

    Florida International University
    Head coach: Rita Buck-Crockett

Potential: Volleyball Hall of Famer and former WPVA and AVP player Rita Buck-Crockett will take the helm at FIU and expects nothing less than to contend for the national championship. Using her international connections, Buck-Crockett has collected some excellent players from abroad, including Jekaterina Stepanova (Grad, 6'3"), formerly a standout at Florida State who made it to the pairs semifinals last year and will likely be FIU’s top player. Other athletes to watch include Kristine Monforte (So., 5'8"), Ksenia Sukhareva (Jr., 6'0"), Maryna Samoday (Jr., 6'0"), Emily Podschweit (Fr., 5'7"), and Camila Rosado (Jr., 5'7") who is still recovering from an injury but hopes to recover in time to make an impact this season.

The MVB team is in need of encouragment. They have all the talent; they just need to piece the team together correctly.

I've never seen the arena quite sooo empty as it has been lately.

da SA should be running publicity around the USC matches this weekend..UH should offer .5 price admission$ to turnstile tickets for USC @Aloha Stadium (August 2013).

Why doesn't Tsai think out of the box with his beat assignments (FB, MVB)??

  6. Otto:

Why is it Tsai's responsibility to market MVB? UH should do something? At least MBB, had Jaime Smith volunteer and step up with support from Gib and the team. The MBB team went door to door in the dorms, posted videos on various UH sites, etc....

  7. dedicatedfan:

Change subject, concerning WBB, per Laura Beeman, Vicky Tagalicod and Kanisha Bello, will not be returning for their Senior Season. They will be honored along with the 2 Seniors, on Senior Night.

  8. Cindy Luis:

We don't do publicity notices, we do stories. Stephen will have advances about the upcoming SC matches and likely a feature. been our standard pre-match coverage for years.

  9. tiffers:

both Vicky and Kanisha are graduating in May, although they are both Juniors (eligibility wise)

  11. dedicatedfan:

Cindy, is Dave Shoji, still trying to fill the 3 open dates on his schedule, or is he just going with a 25 game schedule? Suggestion, why not put on another 4 team tournament prior to the 1st one. Or, is there NCAA regulations when teams can start actually playing matches.

  12. dedicatedfan:

Dave Shoji should talk to BOH, or one of the Hotel Chains, to see if they would be willing to sponsor a tournament. Would love to see another tournament, featuring teams from the PAC-12, BIG Ten, and SEC.

  13. mainlandgal:

This feed started out mentioning the Wahine Sand Volleyball being #5 in the pre-season poll. It would be nice for once to let the Wahine Sand Volleyball team get some much deserved recognition without the Indoor Volleyball "talk, speculation", etc sneaking in. Please give the Wahine Sand Volleyball team their much deserved time. They have all been working incredibly hard during their off season and are ready to play hard and play tough.

  14. hollycow:

As long as it's about UH volleyball say your views bloggers. Sand, indoors, men, it all means well. Cindy's blog (TY Cindy) is a wonderful means to get new info across to us diehard UH volley fans, whatever three sports fore mentioned. Thanks roofer for the tentative fall schedule, I didn't know about it and where else can we input this but Cindy's Volley Shots whatever the heading is.

  15. vballfreak808:

Since Texas is leaving that Saturday night, they will be playin at 11am and 6pm, I wonder if both will be televised

  16. warriorfan:

Why would OC16 televise a texas match at 11 am, makes no sense..

Anyway I dislike the schedule and hope there are some games not announced yet that will boost the rpi.
Maybe a game at stanford during the davis road trip?

If this schedule stays as is, then I will not be shocked at all if the wahine are not in the top 20 in rpi come december.

  17. Cindy Luis:

Haven't talked to Shoji lately about the schedule. Football schedule not out yet which plays into volleyball scheduling.
I don't know where you'd drop in another tournament, regardless of sponsorship. Early season is full. After that, other teams in the middle of their conference play, as is UH.

I could see OC16 televising that 11 a.m. match, part of their contract.

  18. Purple&Green:

This IS a sand thread, right?!
    Anyway.

    Setter: 6'2 Hannah Rooks
    Opp: 6'0 Sydney Shinn

MBs: 6'0 Emily Mount , 5'9 Brittany Tiegs

    OHs: 6'2 Olivia Urban , 5'10 Ku'ulei Zalopany

    Libero: 5'9 Karlee Riggs

    Sub: 5'10 Ashley Johnson (OH3)
Seemingly 5'11 Cubi-Otineru (OH/OPP) would also participate IF asked to join this match too, Sat Oct. 19, a night after the Alumnae match..imo she's always willing to play ball no matter the circumstance.
    ;-)

I also like the idea of Dave inviting the *to be* winners of the PVL league @2013 USAV Open Nationals..you can gaurantee that it will be outta the Hoosier Region, Da Exterminators (Kanani's old team).

It's Hawai'i; who wouldn't jump at that opportunity IF able??

  19. Purple&Green:

Contact: Mitch Stemm, Region Commissioner, msjrcoord@aol.com

  20. Purple&Green:

    Cindy,

    You still love me, hah?!

Is/would this be possible..the invite of a USAV team in playing a NCAA regular season match in 2013?

    Help pls.

  21. dedicatedfan:

Cindy, I was thinking, maybe, before the Chevron tournament. That is why I asked you, if there was a NCAA regulation on when teams can actually start playing matches that count.

  22. Cindy Luis:

Yes, there is an official date for start of practice and playing of matches. don't have them off hand but earliest play has been the last week of Aug. exception used to be made for the NACWA.

  23. Purple&Green:

    ^
In theory, yes. August 24-25th..a three team mini-tourney.

Dave should plan on this permanently, already. Seriously!

A pre-Preseason tournament w/ BYU Provo (who'd play BYUH also in the weekend @ least one other time annually). The one other *varying* local Div.II team (BYUH, HPU, and UH-Hilo (who always seems to gets left out)).

Who'd make the EARLY trek on a yearly basis. Dunno?!

  24. Purple&Green:

    @#20..
PVL is a "professional league" and therefore would not be eligible. Perhaps??

Would the team be a completely different mix of players (as has been Steve Warren's pattern since 1992)? ...do the athletes have EIN #s to any one particular licensed or bonded business entity? ...would the USAV (formerly the USVBA) have objections to 'wouldbes'/perspective participants who'd, say, be "trying out", maybe, for the team in an entirely different VB region?

Hm, there seems to be some gray area that should be quantified.

    Is this soo, Cindy?

  25. dedicatedfan:

Either, Dave has to start planning on having another Tournament, or stick with only playing 25 matches, and hope the Wahine go undefeated. Otherwise, it will be very difficult for the Wahine to make the Top 16 teams in RPI. Dave, cannot put his hopes on the other Big West teams helping the Wahine, RPI wise. In fact, the way it looks right now, the Wahine need to come out of those 3 pre-conference tournaments 9-0, to even have a shot at being one of the Top 16 teams in RPI. I truly do not know why, Dave did not think in advance, and now has to scramble to find 3 teams to play.

On a different note, I wish Dave would release, Scott Wong from being the Associate Coach. Have Scott Wong just concentrate on being the Head Coach of Sand Volleyball. By having Scott being the Associate Coach, for indoor, and Head Coach, for Sand, he is hurting one of those teams. Especially, when it comes to recruiting. Dave needs to go out and find an assistant coach that is solely dedicated to coaching indoor, not both.

  26. Cindy Luis:

Seriously doubt that Wong will be 'released' as associate indoor coach. not sure why you think it's hurting the teams. recruiting is done. there is no conflict. the indoor team trains with sand. Wong was recruiting sand during last year's sand season.

  27. dedicatedfan:

I did not mean, released as being the Sand Coach, I meant the Indoor Coach. At the D1 level, how can a coach successfully coach 2 D1 sports team. It has to hurt one of the sports teams. Are there any other coaches that coach both Indoor and Sand?

  28. Cindy Luis:

my fault. i mistyped it. I understood your comment. will iix it.

  29. hollycow:

    Nina Matthies Pepperdine.

  30. hollycow:

Forgot, and also she's the head coach of both, unlike Wong associate for indoors.
